before drywall, and devices you should mostly buy

Builders are good at wiring and framing-stage infrastructure; their
device packages are typically last-generation hardware at a
healthy markup, locked to whatever platform their vendor sells. Take the
pre-wire (often fairly priced at $1,500–$4,000), decline the gadget
bundle, and spend the same money on current hardware the week you move
in.

Pick the Ecosystem Once

Before buying anything from the second list, decide the platform
question: it should almost always be whichever ecosystem your
household’s phones and speakers already lean toward. Then buy
